Review of Rosemary's Baby (1968) by Alden S — 31 Oct 2015
The film starts out perfectly paced, engaging, and captivating, but ends up dragging just a tad from being too long, and despite an otherwise subtle tone that plays game's with your head it ends on an incredibly shlocky note. The film could've done with a shorter running time to improve its minor pacing issues and left the ending a mystery open for interpretation as to not mess with the tone of the rest of it. That or add in more over the top elements throughout a la The Exorcist so the ending wouldn't have felt so absurd in contrast with the rest of the film. Despite these gripes of mine though the writing is still damn good, all the characters feel like real people, and an incredible amount of talent clearly went into making the film. It's just a shame that it's just merely good as it could've been great.
8-/10.
