Review of Rosemary's Baby (1968) by Brian B — 19 Mar 2017
This really felt like one of those movies you had to watch in context. It's a good movie, with an interesting plot, but it's not horror. It's suspense and mystery. Perhaps in 1968 people were stil reluctant to say Satan out loud and that made it a horror. I in no way think modern torture porn is an improvement from classic horror, but this movie was lacking an edge. Mia Farrow plays a great house wife, but house wives make boring protagonists. The neighbours are suspicious, but not terribly threatening... unless you're a bowl of prunes.
I don't want to harp on the movie too hard, because if you go into this movie expecting a suspense/mystery film, then you'll get a good movie. But don't expect your heart to race. Beyond all that, the old apartment building is the perfect environment for the film, and the music fits perfectly. The acting is really well delivered from a perfectly cast crew.
