Review of Rosemary's Baby (1968) by Javier A — 10 Sep 2010
Amazing. Rosemary's Baby is an exceptional film, one of the best if not the best horror film of all time. This film is amazing and exceptional because of the way the film is portrayed, it is not a regular run of the mill horror film, it is art. I have not seen a Horror film be taken as seriously before or since.
The story is very original and is shown to us with such seriousness that one doesn't feel like they are watching a horror film. Roman Polanski's mastery of his craft is on display in this film. No wasted shots, the tension is palpable. He understood that the only way to make an excellent and definitive horror film is to focus on the psychological aspect of it, not on effects and on gore. We are not frightened by what we see, but what the main character is going through, her tension is exceptionally transmitted through the screen.
Speaking of acting, the acting by the entire cast splendid. They all contribute to the overall effectiveness of the film. But the person who dominates the entire film, purposefully of course, is Mia Farrow. She delivered an oscar wining performance, even though she did not win one. You feel every moment of joy with her, every excruciating drop of sweat that is wrenched from her is beautifully delivered. Her acting elevated this film from good to great, I cannot imagine anyone else being Rosemary.
This film is incredible, a must watch for any horror fan, but most importantly a must watch for any lover of great films.
