Review of Rope (1948) by Emily B — 22 Jul 2008
This film takes place in one location, and in real time. I never knew that films from the 40's could be anything but romantic, entertaining or exploitative. The subject matter alone is shocking even for today.
The opening scene is two men strangling another man simply to know what it's like. They then proceed to have a party moments later, which they arranged for the occasion. The guests include the family and friends of the deceased, and dinner is served off the chest his body in stuffed in.
Most of the film consists of paranoid banter between one of the killers who is feeling guilty and the guests. The other killer is so proud of himself for pulling off the scheme and throwing this brilliant party for the thrill of possibly getting caught.
What? Yes, this movie incredible.
