Review of Rope (1948) by Anis T — 19 Dec 2008
Why 'Rope' isn't placed on the same level as other Hitchcock films such as 'Psycho' and 'Vertigo' I'll never know, but let me just say one thing...this film is perfection.
From the inventive camera work (no cutaway scenes- the whole thing was done in one, continuous shot) to the sick and twisted plot, 'Rope' works as an airtight, masterfully executed tale of one sick mind stretching the boundaries until he pushes just a little too far (and Jimmy Stewart comes to save the day, of course).
Just like 'Strangers on a Train', 'Rope' has more emotional depth with the homosexual undertones in this one...I love it! There's no denying that the relationship between Brandon and Phillip is a gay one, but of course no one could come outright and say that in 1940s film.
Basically, it's one of my very favorite Hitchcock films, and I want to own it very much (hint: buy it for me, someone).
