Review of Rope (1948) by Alex G — 08 Jul 2009
An interesting murder story, but what really makes this film stand out is the way in which it was shot. Film reel-long takes show the plot unfolding in real time, starting with a murder and continuing through a party the murderers host with the dead body in the room.
Dall and Granger are both very good as the cold-blooded killers, but James Stewart unsurprisingly steals the show as the observant professor. Don't rent this movie expecting one of the action or horror films that Hitchcock is best known for; this is a black comedy, and a very good one.
