Review of Rope (1948) by Ida K — 01 Aug 2009
I love it when people take risks when making movies, and this one certainly is risky. I mean when Brandon and Phillip aren't doing each other in the other room, they are murdering some poor chap with a sliver of rope and then bragging about it.
The way Hitchy shot it, the fantastic dialogue, [really, some of my favorite lines and situations come from this one,] and the awesomeness of James Stewart. Oh, and Mrs. Wilson, the maid-like lady ...
eh, housekeeper I guess, her and the other females in this flick really have some of the best lines; if you would want to include Brandon and Phillip in the category of "ladies," it's fine by me.
Boy does Hitchcock love those ladies! The piano scene between Phillip and Rupert kept me on my toes. There are two very hidden [and awesome] Hitchcock cameos, one in the beginning of him crossing the street, and one in the latter half of the film, his famous silhouette on a red neon sign.
[Or so I am told.] This flick did have some very long shots, VERY long, which was part of the 'experiment' I guess. It was risky to experiment on a movie like this, but with a director like Hitchcock, I guess the studio lets him do what he wants.
It was totally worth it - I love this movie; if only more directors today took risks.
