Review of Rope (1948) by Ryan D — 31 Aug 2009
I'm ashamed to admit I go to film school and have only seen a few Hitchcock films. This is a great one. It's a simple story of two spoiled youths with superiority complexes that decide to commit a murder just for kicks, then have a dinner party with the corpse in the middle of the room.
This is a near perfect suspense movie and it's now mostly noted for its technical achievements. The film is designed to look like it's done in long continuous takes. The lens cover transition are kinda rough, but I can let it slide. The set in this flick is essentially a whole other character, simply amazing what Hitchcock pulls off with the apartment. I especially love the way the city backdrop goes from day to night as the tension builds.
