Review of Rope (1948) by Meril L — 12 Oct 2009
Out of all the Hitchcock movies I have seen, this is one is so far my favorite and perhaps the best. There are a lot of subtle, brilliant moments throughout film. I had questioned throughout the film: Why was Philip a part of the murder if he's felt it on his conscience this much? But there could be two answers.
1) Philip and Brandon are homosexual lovers and Brandon was going to kill David no matter what, so Philip decided to help. 2) Philip looks up to his old professor, Rupert, so much that Brandon was able to convince him through Rupert's old words.
It could be a combination of the two. Rope is filled with dark humor, and sometimes I felt like a creep for laughing at the jokes. The editing style and the way it was shot is genius. I only caught 5 cuts, but supposedly the longest shot is only 10 minutes long.
I would love to re-watch the movie and see if I could find every single cut that was made. I'm not going to give anything away, but if you look at this movie like there isn't a single continuity error, you will find a lot of secrets within the end of the film.
Beautiful performances, well shot, a satire on modern education that holds true today. I give this one a 5/5.
