Review of Rope (1948) by Georgios L — 03 Mar 2011
An interesting experiment in film-making but sadly not a lot more going on with this film. There are some nice touches, but only hints of the genius that of Psycho. The whole thing feels very much like a play(it is based on a play, after all!) but a film should be more than that shouldn't it? The most cinematic thing about it is the beginning where we can see an ordinary street where people are going about their business as usual, completely unaware of what is happening in the flat.
Then the camera slowly turns to show us the window of the apartment where a murder is taking place. And personally I wasn't at any point of the film, torn: from the very beginning I wanted them to get caught.
