Review of Rope (1948) by Martin Ezequiel N — 18 Jan 2013
Though a technical accomplishment, the acting is not very good (with the exception of Jimmy Stewart) and for a while the story is mediocre and uninteresting, and you grow impatient for the payoff. The philosophical implications I don't think are very well played out and are kind of thrown away.
I didn't get the implied homosexuality of it when first watching it, but can see it reflecting upon it now. The end of it (starting with when Jimmy Stewart comes back to "get his ciggarette case") is the best part of it and very much worth the wait.
It is most likely because of the "boring" scenes preceding it. Then again, in a very basic way, is how you build suspense, which of course, Mister Hitchcock is so very good at.
