Review of Rope (1948) by Jake G — 19 Oct 2009
When you get beyond the classics, major films like REAR WINDOW and NORTH BY NORTHWEST, it's great to discover that there's another level of solid films underneath- "minor works." ROPE is one of these films, and a good one to boot.
Hitch uses ROPE as an experiment, with the action taking place in a single apartment, often within a single shot. It has the feel of a play- a good one, of course. The plot is excellent, as we take for granted with Hitchcock films, and James Stewart has a great minor performance.
A subtle, understated movie that is nevertheless a crowd pleaser, ROPE is a real diamond in the dark.
