Review of Rope (1948) by Cameron J — 15 Mar 2014
Masterful, atmospheric, well-acted, tense and engrossing, Hitchcock's Rope delivers what is a career-best for John Dall, as a psychotic murderer who kills for the thrill of it, but James Stewart, of course, steals every scene prodigiously.
Hitchcock subjects the enthralled viewer to moments of unbelievable consternation, where the monopolizing director makes you think the inevitable event has took place - they've done it! They've found David! - but something always comes up and in an intelligent way, at that.
The end scene, where the triumvirate have a tense scene in which Dall still insists he doesn't know where David is, yet the imminent sense of doom that's been charging the entire masterpiece finally is liberated.
Highly enjoyable thriller.
