Review of Room Service (1938) by Justin M — 04 Sep 2007
Many people say bad reviews for this movie, but I feel that it is undesvably so. The movie is not as zany as some of their others. However the story does have a good flow and is logical enough. The one brothre who seems to me at least to be pushed the side is Harpo, altouhg he does have his moments I can see where the Harpo enthuastists would be dissapointed.
That to me is the only place where it is mostly evident that it was not written for them. I feel Groucho and Chico come across well. The film is does not realy include the usual marx brothers rountiues, but it does have some funny dialoge.
The film is stagebound, but I dont see why that is nessicarily a bad thing. If we were to let it stand on it's on and not compare it with the other marx films, I think the reviews would be much better.
Because it is a very funny film. However if I put it on the Marx scale I would say it would be the best of their later work. I mean their first seven movies are really their best in my opinion, and their later films seemed to just repeat the same motions witout capturing the same magic, so I give this film extra points for not trying to fit the usual marx formula, which we alraedy saw at it's best.
