Review of Room in Rome (2010) by Mahmood H — 16 Nov 2010
It's actually very tricky to write a review about this movie. It's the first movie that actually gives me a hard time wiriting about it.
Julio Medem is my favorite director. "Los Amantes del circulo polar" (Lovers of the Arctic Circle) and "Lucia y el sexo" are both in my all time favorite list. "Tierra" was also a very good movie. I was expecting this remake of Chilean movie "En la came" to see what Medem would do with it. I thought at first it was a little bit cliche from him to transfer the movie from an anonymous room to the city of Rome. But I also thought it was daring to move the story from a plot involving a man and a woman to a liaison between two women.
The thing about "Room in Rome" is that it knows how to scramble all your landmarks. It's got an excellent start, light. sexy and beautiful, but yet deep and complicated, like a Julio Medem movie. But then it slows down and follows the pattern of an Antonioni movie, dramatic and existential. And the final is a little bit like a Nick Cassavetes movie, genuine and full of hope.
That makes it all very hard to labelize and judge. I thought it was great, but then I strongly felt it was boring and cheesy, before realizing it was after all a very good movie, at the same time eerie and very realistic.
Definitelt worth seeing.
