Review of Room 237 (2012) by Bill A — 08 Apr 2013
Rodney Ascher directs this impressive documentary on the many theories people have about the deeper meaning of Stanley Kubrick's classic The Shining. Ascher interviews several people about how they believe they have unlocked the hidden meaning within the film.
Before you see this film, the basic presumption of it is that Stanley Kubrick is a genius and that everything in his films are intentionally done. I am a huge Kubrick fan and I am immensely impressed by the nuances and small details that these people pick out.
The film, at no point, picks which theory it believes to be correct. It simply displays the theories and allows the viewer to decipher which parts he or she believes. The documentary never shows the people being interviewed but instead is compiled of clips from The Shining itself, the rest of Kubrick's filmography, and other pieces of film.
In the end, what Ascher has created is not simply a love letter to Kubrick and The Shining but also an amazing portrait of modern cinema studies.
