Review of Room 237 (2012) by Joshua L — 30 Sep 2014
Before viewing "Room 237" I already considered "The Shining" one of the most overrated movies ever, but was interested in the idea of a genius like S. Kubrick craftily planting powerful metaphors throughout the movie, so I gave it a watch with an open mind. I was greatly disappointed. Each theory had at least one of these three faults:
1. The theorist gets a fact wrong. For example, one theorist tells us a poster has a Minotaur in it, when the figure in the poster lacks horns (Minotaurs have the head of a bull).
2. The theory focuses on very unconvincing "evidence." For example, the "hard-on" scene looks entirely like a coincidence.
3. The assertions are ridiculously grandiose and overblown. For example, "The Shining" to one theorist is supposed to represent "all patterns of the world." Outstanding claims require outstanding evidence, which of course this theorist didn't provide.
Kubrick was one of the greatest filmmakers ever, but these theories are probably almost all untrue.
