Review of Room 237 (2012) by Timothy S — 05 Nov 2014
Most of Room 237 is utter nonsense, voiced over by lunatic conspiracy theorists who need to be reminded, "IT'S A MOVIE!".
About 15-20% of the discussion is interesting, though, with people making sharp observations about the filmmaking techniques and the Native American / historical imagery peppered throughout The Shining, and the possible interpretations therein.
The documentary itself is shoddily put together. Just downright sloppy. At first, I thought it was quaint, how the voiceovers were accompanied by footage from nearly all of Kubrick's films, but after awhile, the device became tired and tedious. I do not need to see General Mireau from Paths of Glory talking on a phone when somebody is talking about Stanley Kubrick making a phone call. That's idiotic.
I'm not sorry I watched it, I guess, but I am definitely disappointed. I wanted this to be better, as The Shining is definitely a film that is ripe for interpretations. Everyone in the film is entitled to their interpretations, but I have a very low tolerance for crackpot theories.
