Review of Room (2015) by A V — 02 May 2016
Bigger than an empty space.
Room is a fantastic character study. The film, which rides on its two leads, is powerful and engaging, making the audience feel isolated and scared. Out of all the elements and effort that was put into this film it is really the acting, specifically Larson and Trembly who this film would not work without.
Room is a very well rounded film. It is solid on all fronts including direction, writing, cinematography, and above all acting. It is a very small film with a very small budget. This makes the film even more reliant on storytelling and character development. These two both have very emotional and realistic character arcs, with very talented rising stars to portray them. Larson and Trembly are both in the race for best actress and best supporting actor, but it is definitely Larson who will get much awards praise.
Room, though well rounded, is an imperfect film. The suspense does peak and reach its height at the end of its first act. There is nothing much it except one other scene later on in the film. After the peak, it becomes less interesting, but still entertaining and powerful. Another problem is the character of William H. Macy, who is obviously the most recognizable actor in the whole film. His character arc feels unfinished and feels as if he was only available for one or two days on set, which resulted in less appearances by what could've been a very intriguing arc.
Overall the film delivers on its promises, a suspenseful film with a glimmer of hope. With great performances and inspiring storytelling, though imperfect, manages to join many in the race for best picture.
Rating: 8.3 (A-).
