Review of Rookie of the Year (1993) by David S — 27 Feb 2008

Oh man. Straight out of the books of baseball films of the 90s. A heartwarming tale of a struggling, last place team who employs an unlikely hero (in this case, a 12 year old boy who can throw at 100 mph due to his tendons fusing weirdly after a freak accident involving slipping on a stray baseball) who turns the team around and leads them into first place and eventually wins the pennant.

Entertaining and watchable as a family feature I suppose but not all that great. It's also worth nothing (though I don't fault it for unrealism) that only being able to throw a 100 mph fastball would in all likelihood get you hammered in real life in the major leagues.

But like I said, it's a film so realism can go to hell. It doesn't stop the film from being unoriginal though...
