Review of Rookie of the Year (1993) by Scott I — 12 Dec 2009
Rookie of the Year, right from the very beginning, is a charming and pleasurable film that leaves you completely satisfied. The Lush thematic score by Bill Conti welcomes you during the credit sequence and puts you in the mood for the whimsical, albeit far-fetched plot.
This is a film that must be seen in the correct light. Its a story that doesn't make much sense, and rests perfectly on unbelievability. But like most fun loving children's films, it pays off big time if you buy into it. The humor of Daniel Stern is apparent throughout, and the dialogue reflects his sense of wit and subtle adult humor. Great lines such as "We don't have a boat! we have wood... in the vague shape of a boat" have been a source of laughter for myself and my friends since we saw the movie when we were kids.
The pacing is great, and it never falls into over sentimentality. Performances by Busey, Stern, Hall, and especially Thomas Nicholas are surprisingly consistent.
Upon reviewing this film now that I am older, I still enjoy it every time and still consider it one of my all time favorite movies! As long as you know what you're getting when you're going into it, and you let yourself buy into the plot, you will certainly enjoy every minute of it!
