Review of Ronin (1998) by Benedick L — 27 Aug 2009
You are under the impression that with a good director, nay a brilliant one and a stellar cast list, you would recieve a fantastic movie. Unfortunately, it fails by half. Whilst the chemistry between De Niro and Reno is good and believable, the story falls at the waist side.
I do like the mystery elements to it (what is in the briefcase? What happens to all the characters? etc) but, and this maybe due to it being 11 years old, there is nothing really that new here. The car chases are exciting, especially the second of the set pieces, but you feel the movie was centred around these car chases rather than them happening spontaneously.
Especially if you watch the extras. It is all very well picking holes in a film but the plot could have been more twisty turny to make it more exciting. This is obviously De Niro's follow up to Heat.
See this, if you like that film.
