Review of Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997) by Michael Y — 07 May 2011
Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow playing 2 silly blondes. It's not great, but it's silly mind numbing enough to be entertaining.
Romy and Michele are 2 best friends since highschool living in L.A. They don't live great, but they still have fun. Then they begin to panic when they get their high school ten year reunion invitation. While reminiscing their high school days the two try to find a way to go to the reunion acting more successful then they really have become since graduation. The story is a little John Hughes (and not in a good way) and the writing isn't great, but the actors do an entertaining job. Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow make a funny team and are hilarious dumb blondes. But the movie isn't ALL about them, the nice additional feature was Janeane Garofalo. She plays her tipical 'I don't give a flying fuck' attitude, but that's exactly what this movie needed. She is always hilarious and adds a little more to the movie. The movie is about reflection on ourselves, living up to standards and the definition of success. But it's not a thinking movie, it's just good comedy.
It's all about the fashion. Sorvino and Kudrow have a nice line of various outfits in the movie that really paints a picture of their character. A lot of characters in this movie are defined by their cloths. It's an important feature. The look of the main enviroments are created well. The highschool scenes aren't thorough, but don't look bad. The L.A. spot looks like it should, and the reunion is very flashy. The directing is pretty good, capturing important scenes in a stylistic way, or in a funny way. The comedy was shot well. But what's really great in this movie is the reunion dance scene. Best dance choreography in a movie ever. (You'll see. It's pretty weird.).
Romy and Mighele's High School Reunion isn't a masterpiece, or a very creative comedy. But it's not unwatchable. The cast does a great and funny job with their lines and characters which makes this movie fun and silly enough to be entertaining.
