Review of Romulus, My Father (2007) by Joshua G — 06 Nov 2007
Such a great film. Richard Roxburgh's direction is impecable and Nick Drake's screenplay is flawless. The film is beautifully shot, with the Australian landscape once again proving to be one of cinema's greatest backdrops.
The subtle yet beautiful musical score compliments the cinematography . The performances of Bana, Potente and the rest of the supporting cast are beautiful and highly professional. Yet if you're heart does not break by the performance of Kodi Smit-McPhee then you are simply not human.
It is an utterly breathtaking turn by a lad who clearly has a stellar future ahead, should the industry look favourably upon him. He really is unbelieveable. This is such a surprise, you are aware of the kind of film you could be seeing by the title, but literally you don't expect to leave it thinking it is one of the year's best films.
I have been waiting for another powerful smack in the face from Aussie filmakers ever since they proved it was possible with films like Lantana & Look Both Ways.
