Review of Romper Stomper (1992) by Milö G — 01 Feb 2008
This movie is intense.
The most violent skinhead movie I know of. More accurate than American history X and with much better acting.
Russel Crowe gives one of his best performances as Hando. Although russel crowe is usually a hero, a misunderstood person, or a very smooth bad guy(like in 3:10 to yuma) In this movie he shows how truly scary a part he can play.
This movie doesn't show the skins in cliches(other than being REALLY violent) and it shows them as people more than American history X did, but not as much as this is England did. It shows their comradery and brotherhood fairly well after the party scene, and when bubs dies. Davey the second in command of the skins is particularly well played, and is a pretty deep character.
Another interesting thing to note is that despite Davey's fallout with the gang, he never renounces racism which makes this one of the only skinhead movies without the redemption theme the only other one I can think of is made in britain.
Another thing to note is that this is the only movie with music that sounds like REAL skinhead music, RAC.
This was the best skinhead movie for over a decade. It's only come close to being surpassed by This Is England which came out 15 years later.
