Review of Romper Stomper (1992) by Morgan M — 23 Mar 2008
Some really good performances in a pretty disturbing story. Although the picture is dark, the movie is really well-directed. I found myself trying to shake off my sympathy towards some of these savage Neo-Nazi skinheads from time to time so I don't think this movie is strictly an "All skinheads are the devil" movie.
I think it is also about damaged people who are desperate to belong somewhere and are drawn to Hando's conviction, leadership and charisma. Russel Crowe was of course incredible as Hando, but I also loved Daniel Pollock as his best friend Davey who brought a lot of sadness and frustration to his otherwise Nazi-bastard character with very little dialogue.
(Note: I just learned that Daniel Pollock comitted suicide before the movie's release. Even sadder.).
