Review of Romeo and Juliet (1968) by Fae Guardian — 24 Jun 2008
Zeferelli is a master.
Purists hate him because he sometimes trims the dialog but the story never suffers.
What I love most about this movie is that the actors are speaking Shakespeare's words, but the words flow as if they are merely speaking naturally. I have never seen any other director who is able to make Shakespeare sound this way. I am so tired of hearing performers make the bard sound like stilted poetry.
Zeferelli's Hamlet (w/Mel Gibson) was also masterfully directed but I do not enjoy the story as much.
I like this one better than any of the remakes I have seen. The party and the balcony scenes were so well done. And Mercutio's taunting of the nurse "a sail" never made sense until I saw it on the screen.
