Review of Romeo and Juliet (1968) by Vincent V — 12 Sep 2008
Forty years ago, I fell in love with this movie at first viewing with my high school English cast. At 17, I developed my first crush. Leonard Whiting was the most beautiful male I had ever seen in my life, with that unmatchable face and form, plus the perfect voice. I still am in awe of him. I swear that, when he appeared that first time, that every girl in the audience, including me, sighed! All of the girls loved Romeo/Leonard, and all of the boys thought that Juliet/Olivia was THE girl! We ALL loved this film, and its influence and memories linger for many of us.
"Romeo & Juilet" is like a medieval tapestry that has come to life; everything is perfect: the actors, costumes, sets and surroundings, music... It is exactly right.
I saw this in three theaters for a grand total of 25 times~which was uncommon back then; and, I have seen it more than 100 times since. It makes me laugh and cry every time. I still collect everything about this film and have all three soundtracks produced, including the rare COMPLETE soundtrack!
PS: Zac E?! I think not! He does not come anywhere near Len's wondrous appearance!
PS 2: The "updated" version is awful, making this version truly notable.
