Review of Romeo and Juliet (1968) by Carlos R — 05 Jan 2011
The most famous and tragic love story of all time, became in 1968 one of the best romantic films I've ever seen. I wasn't expecting very much with this movie, but it was a pleasent surprise to find out how great and beautiful it is.
With a cast full of practically unknown actors, this movie has one of the best ensembled cast I've had the pleasure to see, starting with the two leads, and then all the secondary characters... everyone was superb.
Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting were perfect together, and they played their roles with passion, effort, magic, realism and pure perfection. They are the main reason why this film works. The sets and costumes were excellent too, and also was the score.
I don't know anything about Shakespeare's works, so I can't give an opinion about this movie as an adaptation of his play, but I definitely recognize and appreciate good and exciting cinema when I see it, and this jewel is a perfect example of a great, moving and solid motion picture.
