Review of Romeo and Juliet (1968) by Peter P — 20 Aug 2011
Leonard Whiting was 17 years old,and Olivia Hussey was 15 years old, when Franco Zeffirelli took a risk and cast them as Romeo and Juliet, the rest is history! The best film version and most celebrated of Shakespeare's masterpiece about the star-crossed lovers, play with siutable callow and very attractively by the two main stars, who work beautifully in the more passionate sequences, and broke taboo by also playing in the nude! The whole film is pure beauty, the colors, the music, the poetry of Shakespeare, elegant and breathtaking beyond words! Franco Zeffirelli has-along with Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles, and now Kenneth Branagh-done more than most to inject Shakespeare with widescreen appeal, and Romeo and Juliet is his greatest one!
