Review of Romeo and Juliet (1968) by Hamilton D — 28 Jan 2012
This will always be my one and only favorite version of Romeo & Juliet. I've seen loads of different versions but none will ever beat this one. Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey play Romeo and Juliet so perfectly and were perfectly cast as the leads. They had great chemistry and really made you invest in Romeo and Juliet's love. For a film that's rated a PG it showed quite alot of the two actors, if anyone gets what I mean, and to me I think it should really be a 12A or 15. If your a fan of Romeo & Juliet then you'll love this, despite it being one of the more old adaptions. I think having two teenagers play teenagers was a smart move, as they really looked their ages, as Leonard Whiting was only 17 and Olivia Hussey only 15 when they made this, and it really showed, but in the best way possible. I've lost count of how many times i've seen it.
The best lines (in no particular order):
Romeo: "My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough touch with a gentle kiss.".
Romeo: "Thus with a kiss I die.".
Juliet: "My only love sprung from my only hate. Too early seen unknown, and known too late.".
