Review of Romancing the Stone (1984) by Jens S — 26 Feb 2012

I remember we had Romancing the Stone in our Grade 6 English textbook - the plot was laid out slide by slide, to ensure our proper comprehension of the whole proceeding of the story. It wasn't until at least a year later that I got the priviledge of watching this on television.

And how dumbfounded and thrilled I was - to use the word "thrilled" is in itself a sort of understatement, because, to be quite honest, I don't think words can fully express the inexplicable charm in this delightful Indiana Jones-type adventure-comedy.

But unlike most other adventure stories, this one had originality, and I think THAT was what made Romancing the Stone a really worthwhile affair. With Alan Silvestri's tension-ridden background music, it really added up to nail-biting suspense too.

In all, with top-notch comedic performances from Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas, and definitely Danny DeVito, this simply defied my expectations, and with a clever inter-mix of adventure, comedy and romance, was quite enjoyable to watch as well.
