Review of Romancing the Stone (1984) by James R — 23 Dec 2007
Cleverly, this film conjoins the two genres of the 30something chick-flick and the "Indiana Jones"-style adventure romp to create a funny, grown-up, comedy to appeal to both camps. and there's lots of laughs to be had at seeing Kathleen Turner's successful but romantically unfulfilled metropolitan woman coping with the unforgiving jungle of South America and growing to like Michael Douglas' rough diamond with his brusque ways.
He's chivalrous, but ultimately has learnt to look out for himself, but he eventually comes to the heroine's rescue, in time-honoured fashion! Danny DeVito's shambolic henchman of his gay gangster brother Ira provides the comic relief to great effect.
A thoroughly action-packed romantic comedy for adults, slightly sullied by a weak sequel - I prefer to imagine Danny DeVito's "War of the Roses" as the true sequel to this film, taking a look at Douglas and Turner as a couple who have grown to hate one another!
