Review of Romance & Cigarettes (2005) by Daniel M — 22 Dec 2007
It feels odd to give this film an middling rating, because the one thing it's not is middling. It's utterly bizarre. But all the disparate elements muddle together into a movie that's clearly less than the sum of its parts.
The massive shifts and clashes in tone make it too hard to read; I couldn't even appreciate the better moments because I was never sure how to approach them. Is it dark comedy or farce or genuine drama? I certainly couldn't tell.
