Review of Romance & Cigarettes (2005) by Luke M — 03 May 2008
John Turturro sure knows how to get a fantastic group of actors together; Susan Sarandon, James Gandolfini, Kate Winslet, Steve Buscemi, Mary-Louise Parker, Mandy Moore, Christopher Walkin - even Eddie Izzard is in this one.
With production assistance from the Coen brothers, this looks like a recipe for an incredible film. The only problem - he decided to make a musical! There are some wonderful moments drawn out from these great actors, but the film feels like a collection of vignettes.
The subject matter - adultery in middle class New York - is compelling enough, but the breaks into song just seem weird. Maybe it's because I just don't like musicals, but I'd much prefer to see the talented John Turturro in front of the camera.
