Review of Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired (2008) by Doris R — 20 Jan 2009
A very interesting and enlightening documentary indeed! Not that his tough childhood and the murder of his wife and unborn baby enhonorates this brilliant filmmaker from having sex with an under-age girl but he did attend all court hearings and adhere to what he was asked to do right up to the point where it became obvious that justice would not be done.
Both the prosecution and defence counsels agree that the judge simply wanted to 'cash in' on this high profile case and tried to take it out on the accused when his actions were in danger of being exposed.
And since he wanted the director deported anyhow - something NOT within his power! - it seemed only fair that Roman Polanski left the States in the end and rebuilt a new life in France. Literally Wanted in the US but Desired in France where he was honoured by the local film industry after producing various sometimes controversial but very successful movies over the years, Roman Polanski seems to have finally found the peace that seemed to elude him in his early years.
What did strike me though was the fact that both 'perpetrator' and 'victim' have meanwhile been married 18years a piece to their relevant partners. May the past finally be buried and Roman allowed to visit the US again without fear of being thrown in jail.
After all, the young woman and her family have forgiven him. It's about time justice was accepted in favour of Roman and against a powerhungry judge breaking promise after promise!
