Review of Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired (2008) by Kimberly B — 04 Oct 2009
I find it harder to evaluate good documentary-film-making than good movie-making, but I don't think this was a particularly well-made documentary.
That being said, the story is still very interesting, and I was fascinated. I had this on my Netflix queue for many months, consistently bumping down, until Polanski's recent arrest made this of particular relevance. It's clear that blatant judicial misconduct took place, and Polanski was not getting a fair trial. Both the prosecuting & the defense attorneys admitted that they didn't blame him for skipping the country, and I don't think any one of us wouldn't try to do the same, in his position.
Regardless of whether or not you think what he did was wrong (yes, it was illegal, but ought it to be?? I say NO), the criminal justice system was failing him, and Polanski had the benefit of money and connections to help him escape. Not everyone has such resources, but we shouldn't criticize him for this.
We learn almost nothing about what actually happened that night, but I guess that wasn't the point of the movie. Still, before you judge Polanski too harshly, watch this film.
