Review of Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017) by Liam H — 01 Feb 2018
I never watch trailers anymore, I made a rule. Sometimes if I generally don't know what a film is, I do still check the trailer out. I watched the trailer for Roman J. Israel and I found it to be misleading upon watching the film.
This film is an interesting watch the first time round, you won't ever watch it again though. It has 2 good main characters (Washington and Farrell), it has good dialouge and it has interesting subject matter.
However the trailer made it seem like the main character went from a downtrodden character to a character who disobeyed the law in a very glamorous way and lived a glamorous lifestyle. The film is much more subdued than that.
There is actually no glamour at all. This film is just a story about one man who betrays his principles a little and goes on a journey of self discovery. It is an intersting film but it is not interesting enough to leave a mark.
Also the ending of the film is kind of poorly written and incomplete. The film would have been more if it was more glamorous and made more of a statement. However the subject matter is interesting enough to watch first time round.
