Review of Roman Holiday (1953) by James B — 06 Dec 2008
It is a rare thing these days for a couple not to fight at some point in the movie, as if suggesting that the characters are not busy enough to step outside of their selfish, bored shells. Roman Holiday, which lacks any such arguments-and other shallow relationship devices-, is thus a breath of fresh air as far as romantic comedies go.
Add to that a great cast (the young Hepburn correctly earns her high billing, while Peck shines in that simple, yet powerful, way of his), along with some great scenes of tension, compassion, and witty interplay, and you have a wonderful film.
Such a splendid film by Wyler, and after three viewings, the film only gets better. I could not stop laughing or smiling the whole way through.
