Review of Roman Holiday (1953) by Elliott F — 06 May 2011
William Wyler's Roman Holiday begins as light, frothy entertainment and evolves into a touching, reverse Cinderella story. Audrey Hepburn plays Princess Anne, who, on the last leg of her visit in Rome, abandons her royal post for a day, as she finds herself in the care of an American newspaperman (Gregory Peck).
Hepburn won 1953's Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal, and she has all the charm to buoy the film and then some. Peck turns in a decent performance, even if he has little to do. Eddie Albert makes for some entertaining scenes as Peck's photographer friend who accompanies the two on their Roman escapade.
Lacking the traditional happy ending, the film ends on a bittersweet note, yet the combination of Wyler, Hepburn, and Peck make this a sweetly enjoyable film.
