Review of Roman Holiday (1953) by Dominic J — 09 Aug 2009
Roman Holiday (1953) -- [6.5] -- Audrey Hepburn grows tired of her busy princess lifestyle, so she sneaks out in the middle of the night and has a fabulous couple of days incognito with Gregory Peck. Naturally, they fall in love, and this is where "Roman Holiday" is at its best.
Hepburn and Peck have good chemistry, despite a pretty creepy age difference. Some of their interaction seems so naturalistic, it must have been improvised -- especially when Peck frightens Hepburn with a practical joke involving putting his hand in a hole in the wall.
It's nice to see Peck unwind in a light-hearted role for a change. The ending was pleasantly surprising, defying romantic comedy conventions in the best possible way.
