Review of Roman Holiday (1953) by Bryan B — 12 Dec 2009
It's not hard to see why Roman Holiday rose to the classic status. This movie marks the big screen debut of Audrey Hepburn (my second actresses of all time followed by Meryl Streep), playing as the Princess Ann who, while on a diplomatic tour in Italy, sneaks out of the palace to witness life in Rome. Accompanying her is Joe Bradley (Played by Gregory Peck), a American reporter who decides to follow Ann in order to get a big exclusive story for his paper. They, along with Joe's photographer friend Irving (played by Eddie Albert) visit all the wondrous sites of Rome.
Needless to say the acting is brilliant in this movie, but it is Audrey Hepburn who naturally steals the spotlight in every scene that she is in. She carries her natural charm and sophistication throughout every scene in the movie and brings out every emotion to the fullest. It's easy to see why she won the Academy Award that year. Gregory Peck and Eddie Albert do a terrific job as well.
This movie is brilliantly made and captures the feel of Rome. However, a city as graceful and powerful as Rome could not over shadow the force of nature that was Audrey Hepburn.
