Review of Roman Holiday (1953) by Jason J — 15 Feb 2010
Absolutely wonderful romantic comedy with Audrey Hepburn at her most beautiful. The story is pure escapist joy from the beginning with great chemistry between the two leads. Roman Holiday is a simple and delightful film about a young princess of some unnamed European country who gets tired of her routine and wants a break from it. In Rome while on a European tour, Princess Ann fakes an illness and runs off for a day of fun. An American reporter Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck) finds her and realizes he's got an exclusive. So he chaperones her around the city without letting her know she's on to him.
This movie makes you fall in love with the charming Audrey Hepburn. She is just fantastic to watch in her Oscar winning performance here. It shows the city of Rome at it's best such is the glorious cinematography. There are many fine moments such as the fight in the dance and Princess Ann's haircut at the barbers! The finale is both uplifting and bittersweet. This movie is an example of a romantic comedy at it's very best. A classic if I ever saw one.
