Review of Roman Holiday (1953) by Kia M — 25 Mar 2013
A classic romantic comedy charmer that is inevitably superficial because of its story. A princess named Anne (Audrey Hepburn), is in the process of visiting many European major cities, and is tired of living the life of royalty and escapes from her living quarters while visiting Rome to go explore the city on her own terms.
Along the way, she meets an American journalist who accompanies her on her one day of freedom and also inevitably falls in love with her. The jokes are mostly comprised of simple slapstick and gender gags, and are only mildly amusing, though the directing talent at work makes it enjoyable to watch and the pacing doesn't lag at any particular juncture in the story.
That said, the ending is quite a decent and (somewhat) realistic closure to the tale, and Hepburn convincingly shows off her acting skills and great looks.
