Review of Roma (2018) by Travis W — 15 Dec 2018
Alfonso Cuaron has achieved a portrait so intimate and immersive that it belies mere watching and approaches something more approximating lived experience. There has probably never been a film less suited for Netflix viewing, and I feel beyond fortunate that I got to experience this film in a theater.
Cuaron's images spool across the screen with such delicacy, care, and riveting composition. The surround sound of the auditorium precisely simulates the noises of the actual space in which the camera finds itself. Noises to the left, play to the left; noises originating behind the location of the camera come from the back of the auditorium.
The viewers are fully enveloped in the world of this film, and it is a world one never wants to leave. Although heart-wrenching at times, violent and unjust, Roma was a world I could abide forever. This could be the platonic ideal of cinema, and history will look back on 2018 as the year a cinematic masterpiece came into being.
