Review of Roma (2018) by Dave P — 05 Jan 2019
'Roma' is beautiful and it has moments that grab you, but it lacks a story to bring it to places I thought it deserved to go. Alfonso Cuarón, who wrote, directed, edited, produced, shot, and perhaps even catered, takes his time to tell us a story that doesn't ever exist. What is initially mesmerizing turns into visual masturbation.
If you leave a movie talking about how beautiful it is, can it be a great movie? That's the debate to be had here. When I watched this with my wife we both agreed that this isn't a top 10 movie of 2018, but it was fascinating. Perhaps others have been hypnotized, but we both thought that not enough happened for this to be a great movie. Wife: 6.2/Husband: 6.8... Final Average Score: 6.4.
