Review of Roma (2018) by Terri R — 30 Dec 2018
I am mainly writing because I feel many reviews I have read have sort of gotten it wrong with this film. Not that there is a wrong way to interpret a film, but so much of what I have read is about this sweeping story of tragedy, dramatic events etc.
.. and to me, what I felt and took from this film was much quieter and simpler. Despite a childhood peppered with some legitimately sad and dramatic events, this is a portrait of a happy childhood DESPITE those events.
Whose life is free from pain? Almost no one. But he did not show much wallowing. Love, and just sort of getting on with life as expeditiously as possible made for a happy life. The love of his nanny, granny, siblings and mother were enough.
That is what I took. I was tired when I watched it so it did feel very slow to me hence the lower rating.
