Review of Roma (2018) by Ahmed A — 17 Dec 2018
Hypnotic jets. Meditative circus performances. Compassionate riots. Cruel men. Wholesome family time. Funny drivers. Deadly serious hospital scenes. Scary scenery. Sad celebrations. Immersive theater experience. Beautiful beauty. Life affirming danger.
The sound design is unique. Am I the first one to compare the production design to Tarkovsky? There are many intimate, emotional scenes that exist in the same frame as these giant broad crowd scenes. I recently saw Adrei Rublev for the first time in the cinema last month and I couldn't stop thinking about how amazing it is to live at this time right now. I can say with pride, forever, that I got to see Roma in the theater on opening weekend. 9pm on a Sunday night because every other screening was sold out, but still.... Every male character is a toxic stereotype, but other than that it's the best new film of the year. More like this, please.
Shantih Shantih Shantih.
