Review of Role Models (2008) by Kat S — 26 Jan 2011
Though this features a high concept and a gaggle of humorous situations to liken it to its 'bromantic' ilk, this film falls short of neo-classic status thanks to its largely weak script and uninspired plot.
By the time the two main characters end up on a camping trip together, it wouldn't be unjust for the viewer to feel as though they are suffering from the same kind of high-concept idea stringing as a Chris Farley movie; indeed, the lame breast and ambien jokes fail to cohere with anything else in the movie, leaving the entire effort thin and contrived.
So, in order to avoid getting arrested, Rudd and Scott have to do community service with a few young adults with whom they obviously share almost nothing in common. It would seem like this idea is potent enough to spawn a few solid laughs, but most of the film's funny moments have nothing to do with the plotting, which, at best, is a waste of the concept at hand.
Though anyone with a plus will get a kick out of the LARP sequences, the fact that their inclusion pads the central concept rather than assisting it should prepare the viewers for the vacuous nature of the comedic setups.
