Review of Role Models (2008) by Al M — 12 Jul 2011
From director David Wain, who also directed Wet Hot American Summer and played a central part in the comedy trio Stella, Role Models is a raunchy, ludicrous, and pretty clever deconstruction of roles in a different sense.
Yes, the title refers to the fact that the two main adult characters are forced into a "big-brother" style community service program. However, the film also concerns the roles we are expected to play from childhood through adulthood.
We are not supposed to be foul-mouth/sex-obsessed young boys, renaissance fair obssessed nerds, thirty-year-old men who act like horny fourteen-year-olds, or misanthropes. Therefore, Roles Models does pursue the rather cheesy theme of learning how to define ourselves and become happy with our lives, but--at the same time-- it is an often clever critique of the roles that society prescribes to us.
Always hilarious, sometimes intelligent, Role Models is adult comedy at its finest. Plus, it achieved a feat I no longer thought possible--it almost made me think that KISS are an awesome band again..
